Importer Certificate Guidelines Under Legal Metrology

  • Legal Metrology Act, 2009
  • Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011
  • Rule 27 governs Importer Registration.

Any importer bringing pre-packaged commodities into India for:

  • Sale
  • Distribution
  • Delivery

This includes electronics, foods, cosmetics, medical devices, toys, etc.

  • Director of Legal Metrology (Central): For national/inter-state importers.
  • State Controller (e.g., Delhi W&M Dept): For intra-state importers.

Application is typically filed at the District Office where the registered office is located.

Submission: At District W&M office by applicant/representative.

Fees:

  • ₹500 - New Registration
  • ₹100 - Amendments
  • Payment via cash or DD to: Controller, Weights & Measures Dept., Govt. of NCT of Delhi

Processing: Includes scrutiny and possible physical verification.

Issuance: Certificate dispatched by Registered Post only.
